More Info
Derek Boogaard was born on June 23, 1982 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He started playing hockey at the age of 2 and credits his mother and father for pushing him in his hockey career.

Boogaard bounced around numerous hockey leagues including the AHL, ECHL and WHL until being drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the seventh round of the 2001 NHL entry draft. In the 2005-06 season, the six-foot-seven left winger was called up to the NHL and since then he has been known as the Wild’s enforcer.

In 2005-06, Boogaard played in 65 games for Minnesota and led the team with 158 penalties in minutes while scoring two goals and six points. His first NHL goal was a big goal however, as it was the game winner versus San Jose Sharks on October, 19, 2005. Even in his career before the NHL, Derek Boogaard played the role of ice enforcer, logging 259 penalties in minutes in his 2004-05 season with the Houston Aeros. The total was the fourth highest in Aeros history. The Wild clearly knew what they were getting when they called up “The Boogeyman.”

Boogaard loves to play in front of Minnesota Wild fans, and his most memorable hockey experience was playing in his first NHL game. Unsurprisingly, Derek Boogaard’s favorite sport other than hockey is boxing. He currently resides in Regina, Saskatchewan.
