James Sheppard was born on April 25, 1988 in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. Sheppard was the Minnesota Wild's first-round choice with the ninth overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

James Sheppard early career was spent at Cape Breton in the QMJHL from 2004-2007. He compiled 96 points in only 56 games in 2006-07, making him a prime NHL prospect.

Minnesota Wild head coach Jacques Lemaire has exhibited confidence in James Sheppard this season. In 37 games, Sheppard has scored nine points on two goals and seven assists.
