More Info
Mikko Koivu was born on March 12, 1983 in Turku, Finland. He started playing hockey at the age of five and he says his family inspired his hockey career. His first job was scooping ice cream at an ice cream parlor. In addition to hockey, Koivu also played soccer in his youth before focusing on hockey.

Mikko Koivu was the Minnesota Wild’s first round selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Before signing with the Wild in 2003, Koivu had an extensive international and amateur career, playing five seasons with TPS Turku teams and then a year with the Houston Aeros before being called up by the Wild. In his year with the Aeros, Koivu ranked second on the team in goals with 20 and third in assists with 28 in 67 games. He represented the Aeros at the AHL All-Star game and scored a goal there.

Koivu’s first NHL season saw him skating in 64 games while posting 21 points with an average of 13:17 TOI. The Wild center was a shootout specialist in his rookie season, as he scored on four of his six chances. Koivu is also effective on the power play, as three of his six goals came on the power play. Koivu stepped his game up tremendously in the 2006-07 season, as he skated in all 82 games and scored 20 goals and 54 points for the Minnesota Wild.

In the offseason, Mikko Koivu resides in Turku, Finland. “Mik” says his most memorable hockey experience was playing in the 2006 Olympic Winter Games for his home country of Finland. If he could meet any person, he would like to meet Tiger Woods. In his downtime, Koivu enjoys to golf and fish. His favorite cities to visit on the road are Chicago and New York. His favorite sweater is his own Minnesota red, gold and green.
